 WHY CHOOSE SAFER FOUNDATION PRODUCTS? 

 Makeup, and especially foundation, is to me an important switch to make, and the biggest reason is because of the fact that your foundation actually sits on your face pretty much all day. 

Which means there’s more time for those products and ingredients to be absorbed into your bloodstream.... Conventional foundations often contain emollients and emulsifiers known as polyethylene glycols (PEGs) that may be contaminated with known carcinogens. 

Not to mention if you’re looking at foundation products with SPF in them, you’re also  potentially absorbing harmful chemical sunscreens, or nano particles along with things like PEGs. In our foundation products, we achieve safer status by using non-nano zinc oxide as our mineral sunscreen agent (an effective mineral that has not been found to be harmful to the ocean ecosystem). 

 We also avoid chemical sunscreens linked to hormone disruption, and avoid nano particles which are extremely small, understudied particles.

 In our foundations, we use a safer combination of plant-derived skin conditioners and emulsifiers, rather than PEGs, to create a flawless look. Each batch of color cosmetics are also tested for heavy metals to ensure it meets our strict safety measures. 

 Heavy metals are not widely tested for in the cosmetic industry as of right now, but they pose serious health concerns. They’re typically UNINTENDED contaminants that unknowingly attach themselves to the intended materials being sourced. Many “natural” cosmetic companies will claim their products as safe, but fail to test the heavy metal levels in their products, therefore they may unwittingly be selling a potentially unsafe product to the marketplace. 

 We are highly selective also when it comes to what pigments we will use. Even though the U.S. currently allows 65 colorants to be used in cosmetics, we prohibit a vast majority of them due to safety, and stick with the 18 that we believe are safer. 

 Ingredients 

 Hyaluronic Acid First, let’s talk about its anti-aging perks. It contains Hyaluronic Acid, a popular anti-aging ingredients and a moisture magnet that’s often used in skincare. It helps skin glow and appear plumper, both immediately and even more with continued use. Both Beautycounter foundations (Skin Twin and Tint Skin) contain hyaluronic acid, but Skin Twin has 10x more. 

 Jojoba Esters These are derived from the desert-dwelling jojoba plant and helps moisturize, soothe and soften skin. Hydrophobic Pigments These pigments provide long-wearing, buildable, second-skin coverage. These type of pigments are what help make it feel and look so natural! 

 Safer Ingredients Skin Twin does not contain mineral oils, cyclic silicones, or synthetic film formers, all of which are common in foundations and may be linked to harmful effects to human health.

 Another thing I love is that that this foundation comes in a glass bottle. Glass has a higher recovery rate, creating a better chance your empty bottle will be recycled into a new product in the future. Moving Skin Twin into glass (vs. Tint Skin’s non-recyclable tube) will avoid an estimated 235k plastic tubes from entering landfills and waterways in just one year. And since the new glass bottle is sourced from North America, the packaging travels an estimated 5,000 fewer miles to get filled.

 How to use: 

 To use it, you’ll just add 1-2 pumps to the palm of your hand and then use your fingertips, a foundation brush or damp beauty blender to blend it into skin. Continue to apply until you have the coverage you want. I usually need just 2 pumps and then maybe a little extra around my eyes! 

Be sure to shake well before you use it. I know switching to safer products is an investment Because we don’t use toxic fillers/preservatives in our products, they are HIGHLY concentrated.

 This means that a little goes a very long way! Trust me when I say: less is more. In fact, I’ve found that I spend LESS using Beautycounter products because I’m getting results by using these smaller, recommended portions (and I even use less than some of the pictured portions), whereas I used to have to use a ton of product—which I now know were full of junk—to even come close to seeing some sort of positive result.
